Charlie Charlie
Charlie Charlie is an urban legend that gained popularity through social media in the early 2010s. It consists of using a piece of paper and pencils as a divination method to contact the supposed spirit of "Charlie".
The ritual goes as follows: Mark off a piece of paper into four quadrants, then label each quarter 'yes' and 'no', with each of the diagonal corners mirroring the label of it's opposing corner like so:
yes | no ---------- no | yes
Then place two pencils in the center of the paper to form an X shape, once balancing atop the other. Participants then ask "Charlie, Charlie, are you there?" or other similar variations to summon the entity. It is believed that the spirit of Charlie will then provide answers to any questions one might ask, with little to no restrictions as to what can be inquired.
The pencils will then supposedly shift to point towards either the 'yes' or 'no' labeled portions of the paper, both indicating that the spirit of Charlie is present whilst providing the question's answer.
The game is a modern incarnation of an older Spanish divination game called "Juego de la Lapicera". The name 'Charlie' was only assigned to the spirit once the game reached America, however. According to scholars, the game did not originate in Mexico either, leaving much about this entity a mystery.
